open hole flute. hole plugs? tone?
hi i have a gemeinhardt open hole flute(french flute) i was doing some research and apparently these flutes have a much better tone to them then a platue flute. i was wondering if i get the hole plugs would it change the tone of the instrument?
The open holes in the 5 keys on a flute are there to allow faster escape of air – therefore, the key heights can be set lower to the chimneys, allowing for faster key action. If you put any plugs in these holes you are defeating that purpose, and the tone will suffer. So taking plugs OUT of the holes will improve it, as opposed to having plugs IN. Closed hole flutes will have equally good tone. There are all kinds of plugs – some lie flat to the bottom of the pad, and some are hollow, making an air-turbulence trap. So – open holes are NOT about tone – the majority of the tone quality is determined by the quality of the cut of the headjoint. At this point, Gemeinhardts are not at the top of ANYONE’s list who is a professional flutist or teacher of serious students – so in your case, it does not much matter. It you are able to make progress on this flute, as soon as you get a *really* good flute- even a step-up like an Azumi – then you should hear a difference. And 90 percent is the PLAYER anyway, not the flute; I check my students’ flutes all the time in lessons, and they all say “Gee, I wish I could make my flute sound like YOU do!” And they of course cannot get MY fine flute to sound any better than theirs . . .
